Dhokra Jewellery

Dhokra is a form of metal craft, practised in India for more than 4000 years. This form of art ropes in traditional handicraft skills to produce exquisite jewellery as well as home decor artefacts that are not only beautiful but functional as well.

For one, Dhokra ornaments carry striking significance as they embody a more primitive simplicity. Although it is vintage in nature, Dhokra jewellery still bears contemporary styles, when mixed in the right proportions.

As the Dhokra artefacts are completely made using ancient handicraft techniques from start to finish, the shapes are not perfect the symmetries are not mirror images nor do these resemble any computer generated graphics. The beauty of Dhokra ornaments is that every artefact is unique in the world, no two Dhokras are the same.

About Dhokra

Largely accomplished by the Bhottada section of the famous Gond tribes of Orissa, Dhokra is the oldest type of metal casting that involves the metal brass as its main ingredient. Also known as Cire Perdue or lost wax procedure, Dhokra involves a replica of the artefact being made with a wax on a clay centre along with significant motifs and embellishments.

As the artefact is heated, the wax melts and leaves its metal structure behind. The artefact enters the stage where it is further decorated with intricate designs to look attractive.

Storing Dhokra Jewellery

Just like every other type of metallic jewellery, Dhokra ornaments too are subjected to accumulation of dust particles and dirt in the long run. The best that can be done is to store it in a jewellery box, avoiding contact with air and water when not in use. Maintain its original tint by cleaning the jewellery with lime or Brasso.
