Kauna is a unique type of handicraft art that is practised in the heart of Manipur. The peculiar craft produces fantastic household products that are not only beautiful but durable as well.

Water Reed, the main and the only ingredient of the Kauna craft is abundantly grown in the marshlands of Jiribam, Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Imphal districts. Fleshy soft stems of water reed are harvested and dried. Only the best ones are handpicked and put to use by carefully weaving the lengthy stalk with a special knotting technique.

The locals of these regions have mastered the art of double-weaving the stem of the Water Reed plant in such a way that it makes into sturdy artefacts that are intact for at least ten years.

About Water Reed

The Water Reed is a typical type of plant that grows only in the stagnant waters of the north-eastern states of India, especially in Tripura and Manipur. The porous outside and its sponge-like kernel of the plant makes it a bad conductor and acts like a natural air-conditioner.
